Things to take care of

Registering and authority

Your child should be registered within 3 days in the municipality where the child is born. If your child is born at home in Eindhoven or at the Catharina Hospital, you should register it in the municipality of Eindhoven.
If your child was born at home in Veldhoven or at the Maxima Medisch Centrum, you should register it in the municipality of Veldhoven.
If you’re not married it is smart to take care of the parental responsibility over your child during the first week.

Visit the website of the Rijksoverheid to see what else you need to arrange after birth.

Insurance

Let your health care insurer know that your child has been born. This has to be done as soon as possible, but within 4 months at the latest.
Also think about registering your child on to your liability insurance and travel insurance or adjusting your home insurance.

Finance

A few weeks after your child is registered, you will get a message that you can apply for child benefit.
If, beside child benefit, you are also entitled to a contribution from the Belastingdienst (tax authority), called 'kindgebonden budget'; you will also get a message about that.

Maybe you also want to think about opening a bank account for your child or adjusting your will (and for example assign a legal guardian)

Visit the website of the Rijksoverheid to see what else you need to arrange after birth.

Vitamins

If you’re breastfeeding, it is advisable to give your child vitamin K from 8 days after birth until your child is about 3 months old. You can obtain this without a prescription from the pharmacy. In case breastfeeding is combined with formula and your child receives more than 500 ml of formula every 24 hours, you don’t have to give vitamin K.
It is advisable for all children (regardless of the kind of food they consume) to be given vitamin D. This is given to the child from the 8th day. You continue doing this until the child is 4 years old.

Remains delivery care package

If, at the end of your post-delivery period, parts of your delivery care package remain, you can use this to help mothers in developing countries. Stichting Baby Hope is an organization that gathers unused materials from postnatal packages and ensures they go to the right place. You can give these materials to us or bring them to a collection point of Stichting Baby Hope.

Evaluation

We, and other obstetric health care providers, would like to know how you experienced our care. All organizations in the Netherlands that provide obstetric care are obliged to evaluate the experiences of their clients. They all use the same questionnaire for this: the PREM.
The results of the PREM are used, both on individual and on national level, to improve the quality of obstetric care.
After your delivery you will receive an email with a link to the PREM questionnaire. If you object to this, you can let us know.

Besides this questionnaire we know that future parents are also looking for reviews about midwifery practices so that they can choose a practice that suits them. We invite you to leave a review or comment on Zorgkaart Nederland, Google or Facebook.
